Cougars plan twentieth anniversary of championship team

The Southwest Cougars continue to prepare for the 2018/2019 season that will see them start on the road in Kenora, Ontario the last weekend in September with a pair of games. Registration for prospects for the Cougars preseason will be on the Cougar website with camp the weekend of September 7.

Before this happens, a bit of the Cougar past will return to Souris. The Cougars were AAA league champions for two years in 1997/98, and the following season 98/99 defeating the Pembina Valley Hawks both seasons to advance to the Regional Air Canada championships.

Former Souris resident, Jeff Affleck, was a member of the team and is in the process of bringing together members and staff of the two championship teams for an August 10 reunion in Souris. The day will include golf, supper and fellowship.

The Cougars had 33 players from Souris, Hartney, Melita, Killarney, Virden, Reston, Wawanesa, Boissevain, Deloraine, and Brandon and was coached by Del Pedrick, Scott Coates and Todd McKay. Bill Lawson was known as the Doc back then when he worked with the team, and Keith Kontzie was the team manager.
