The Varsity girls basketball team’s season (like many others across the province) came to an abrupt end last week. With the cancellation of the Provincial Championships the team was left to reflect on what was one of the most impressive years in the history of the program.
On Tuesday night, March 10, the ladies travelled to Boissevain in what would be their last game of the season. The team had previously lost by a combined 37 points in two games this year against the powerful Broncos. Following a tremendous performance in the Provincial qualifier on the weekend the ladies carried the momentum to Tuesdays game.
After falling behind 6-0 after the opening tip the team quickly rallied after a timeout to only trail by 4 points after the first quarter. From there the team simply refused to lose. Hustle plays and 50/50 balls were all being won by several young women wearing the Sabres uniform. The team rebounded with such success that they grabbed the lead at the haft-time buzzer! The second half was one full of lead changes and high emotion as both teams displayed a tremendous amount of desire. Senior standout guard Michelle Perez stroked a 3-point shot as time expired in third quarter to push the lead to three. The fourth was very tense as the Sabres held off a hard attack by the Broncos. In the end some key defensive stops were the difference as the ladies captured their first Zone Championship Banner since 2008/09. The emotion was incredible as the girls celebrated an intense 49-46 victory. Michelle scored 12 points in the win, while Paige Eissner added 11 points and 13 rebounds. Grade 11 forwards Mackenna Matiowsky and Kaedynce Tuttosi recorded 7 points and 5 points respectively but both came up with key rebounds the whole game.
With the cancellation of Provincials this would serve as a pretty sweet way to end an impressive season. The team finished with a sparkling 31-7 overall record for the year. Thank you to all parents and fans you were part of the awesome ride this team embarked on this year! GO SABS!
