The Bantam Southwest Cougars were in action over the weekend as they hosted the Pembina valley hawks in Hartney Friday, January 24. It was a tight game with the Cugars coming out on top by a score of 2 – 1.

Josh Fluker, assisted by Jaren Waldner, and Kyle O'Connor scored first for the Cougars followed by Ashton Cuvelier, assisted by Ty Plaisier for a power play marker. Ryan Orchard scored for the Hawks in the third but that was all they could muster.

On Saturday, January 25, the Bantam Cougars were in action again in Souris as they hosted the Winnipeg hawks. It was another tight game that went to overtime with the Hawks netting the winner and a 3-2 win for two points. Luke Mackenzie, assisted by Darren Hunt, and Josh Fluker, and Ashton Cuvelier, assisted by Nicholas Cullen, Ty Plaisier made it 2 – 0 in the first before Winnipeg scored one of their own to make it 2 – 1 after one period. It wasn’t until the third period that Winnipeg tied the game to send it to overtime.  Again Winnipeg scored to win the game. The Cougars outshot the visiting Hawks 37 – 32.

During the Saturday night game, the Cougars all wore a number “8” on their helmets to honour the memory of Ryder Adams, a young Manitoba hockey player who lost his battle with cancer.

In other Cougar hockey action around the region, Virden Minor Hockey is hosting the 1st Annual “Virden Minor Hockey Day” on Saturday, February 1. The day will be a fundraiser for both Virden Minor Hockey and the Oil Capital’s Hockey Club. Virden Minor Hockey teams will be playing games throughout the day, commencing at 8:00 and ending at 1:30.

Following the Virden Minor Hockey games, The Southwest Cougars AAA Bantam team will play at 2:00 versus the Parkland Rangers.  Local products, Ty Plaisier and Jack Smith play for the Cougars.  Get to watch some of the best Bantam aged players in the region.  Many of these players will be taken in the MJHL and WHL bantam drafts this coming spring.

The Southwest Cougars AAA U18 team will then play at 4:30 versus the Yellowhead Chiefs.   Local products Braeden Lewis, Hunter Wallace, Eric Reid, and Dexter Whittle suit up for the Cougars and are all Oil Capital’s ‘top prospects’.  Trevor Hunt of Hartney, also with the Cougars, was the Oil Capitals second round pick in the 2018 MJHL draft.  Meanwhile, the Yellowhead Chiefs feature Mitchell Collyer (1st cousin to Drayson Collyer) and Kaden Sutherland who are also prospects of the Oil Capitals.  Southwest and Yellowhead are two top teams in the Manitoba AAA U18 Hockey League and this is sure to be a great game.

The showcase of the evening will be the Virden Oil Capitals vs Portage Terriers at 7:30. See a rematch of last years’ league semi-finals.  During intermissions of this game, the Squirts minor hockey teams will be facing off!
