All series are a best of five
Semi final #1 - MacGregor Wild vs Gladstone Lakers
(MacGregor wins series 3 games to 1)
Saturday, February 22 game recap
It was the tightest series in this year’s playoffs, but the MacGregor Wild prevailed, winning the semi final in four games with an 8-5 win last night in Gladstone.
The Wild got off to a quick 2-0 lead before the midway mark of the first on goals by Patrick Sheldon and Bret Heselwood. The Gladstone Lakers responded at 14:21 to cut the deficit to 2-1 but a late Wild power play goal at 17:46 by Tyler Slobogian had MacGregor up again by two.
The second period was an offensive explosion by both teams with a total of seven goals scored. Just before the five minute mark of the second, Gladstone had scored twice to tie the game at 3-3.
But MacGregor came right back, scoring 30 seconds later at 5:14 to regain the lead.
And they didn’t stop there. Three more MacGregor goals in the next six minutes, the last at 12:12 by Dustin Bruce extended the lead to 7-3.
That was all for Gladstone goalie Tyler Wiess, who gave up seven goals in the first 32 minutes of action. Weiss was replaced by Danny Hall for the final 27 minutes of the match.
The change in net seemed to help Gladstone as they got within two on a shorthanded tally late in the second by Jesse Paradis and then an early goal at 2:43 of the third by Mike Lorange to make it 7-5 MacGregor.
But that’s as close as it got.
Gladstone’s Mike Lorange took a cross checking penalty with 1:21 left in the game. Gladstone, desperate for some goals, had no choice but to pull their goalie and play at even strength. With 29 seconds left on the clock, MacGregor’s Matt Bayduza scored into the empty net for the 8-5 series-ending win.
MacGregor now awaits the winner of the Cartwright/Neepawa series.
