For the first time in many years, Souris School has put together a ladies’ fastball team to compete in Zone 9 competition, and on Tuesday, May 21 they made history capturing the Zone Championship! They travelled to Boissevain, where they played four games, a total of 20 innings of ball, going undefeated during the day to bring home the banner.
The team headed into the zone tournament with a record of 2-2-1 in league play, which ranked them in third place among the six league teams. In pool play the Sabres first defeated Deloraine Colts 6-5, and then downed the previously unbeaten Broncos 8-7. That put them into the semi-final against the Killarney Raiders, whom they defeated 4-3. This meant another battle against the hometown Broncosin the zone final. This game proved to be a defensive battle, with both teams being held scoreless after three complete innings. After the Broncos scored one in the top of the fourth, the Sabres responded right back with six runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Boissevain tried to answer with a two out rally in the fifth, but the Sabres were able to shut them down to steal the championship. It is believed that this is the first ever zone title in fastball for the Souris Sabres! They now travel to Russell on May 31st - June 1st for provincials.
