The school was busy this past weekend with basketball action as the Varsity Girls basketball team opened up their home tournament Friday with a convincing 74 - 35 victory over Hamiota. Paige Eissner led the attack with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Michelle Perez added 12 points.
In the semi-final Saturday morning the ladies took on a good team from Glenboro. The first half was close as both teams worked hard to grab the lead. The ladies showed some grit and a shift early in the second half changed the momentum of the game as the team captured a 48 -29 victory. Grade 10 forward Kenzie Laursen played a fantastic game scoring 12 points and hauling down five rebounds. Michelle added 10 points while Kaedynce Tuttosi added a game-high nine rebounds.
The Sabres would face a tall task in the two time defending Provincial Champions, the Warren Wildcats, in the tournament final. The game was a classic with both teams challenging each other at both ends of the court. The Wildcats jumped out to quick 9 - 0 run to start the game, but the ladies rallied to only trail by three points after the first quarter. The rest of the game was a back and forth affair, with both teams grabbing slim leads throughout. Tournament MVP Michelle Perez was everywhere on the court, most of the time diving on the floor for loose balls and playing tremendous defense. Forty minutes would not prove to be enough time to decide a winner as the teams would need overtime. In the OT the Sabres locked down defensively and received some key rebounds from Kaedynce and Paige as they pulled out a thrilling 57 - 54 victory! Tournament All-Star Paige Eissner recorded a double-double scoring 16 points and adding 11 rebounds. Michelle added 14 points while Kaedynce chipped in with eight points and 13 rebounds.
The ladies travel to Brandon for a stiff test this weekend at the Vincent Massey Tournament. Next home game is Monday, January 20 vs Moosomin at 6:30 p.m., then a battle with rival Boissevain Tuesday, January 21.
