Souris Elks (7W 9L / 4th place in 7 team division)
Once again, Souris showed just how much they love home cooking as they downed Wawanesa on January 17, 5-4 to improve their home record to 6-2. Souris took a 4-1 lead into the third but Wawanesa scored twice to close the gap 4-3 at 12:27. But only 40 seconds later, the Elks’ Ashley Robertson extended the lead to two. Wawanesa scored a late power play goal with two minutes remaining but Souris held on for the victory. The next night was not so kind. As reported above, Melita crushed Souris 9-2. Ashley Robertson and Jordan Greig each registered two assists in the defeat.
Melita Bisons (3W 14L / 7th place in 7 team division)
The Bisons unleashed their cellar-dwelling frustrations on the unsuspecting Souris Elks last Saturday in Melita, scoring three goals in each period, humiliating the Elks 9-2. Ryan Crepeele led the way for the Bisons with a hat trick and two assists. Will Brown chipped in with a goal and three assists while Lucas Oliver scored twice and added an assist. Melita closes out the season on the road in Pilot Mound on January 31 against the 3-13-1 Pilots.
Deloraine Royals (4W 11L 1OTL / 6th place in 7 team division)
After starting the season with three wins and three losses in their first six games, the Royals proceeded to go on a losing streak of seven straight games before defeating Gladstone back on January 11. They were hoping to continue their winning ways last weekend with a pair of road games against Killarney and Neepawa, but instead lost both. They’ve now lost nine of their last ten games. On January 17, Killarney had little difficulty in knocking off the Royals 8-2. Joel Cardinal-Schultz notched a hat trick for Killarney. Cole Olson led the way for Deloraine with two assists. The next afternoon in Neepawa, the Farmers scored twice in the second and added one in the third before Deloraine’s Lyndon Lipinski scored at 14:16 to get Deloraine within two goals. Unfortunately, 11 seconds after his goal, Lipinski took a slashing penalty and the Farmers cruised to the win. Next game for the Royals is after press time on January 22 versus Cartwright. They then close the season at home on January 29 against the Souris Elks. Puck drops at 8:30 p.m.
