So sang the words from ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas,’ as over 150 people entered the Souris-Glenwood Community Hall to hear the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra. The first part of the program took us from Duke Ellington’s arrangement of “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf,” to the stirring strains of “I’ll be Home for Christmas” with vocalist Jayme Giesbrecht, to the narration and interpretive antics of Quinn Greene as he shared, “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” with the orchestra providing the sound effects and ‘mood music.’
After a time of mingling and sampling the Christmas cookies, punch and hot apple cider, the Souris-Glenwood Foundation handed out their grants for 2019.
The second half of the program highlighted the music of Charlie Brown’s Christmas, with Quinn not only telling the story of how Charlie found the true meaning of Christmas in a most expressive style, but also acting the part of almost every Charles Schultz character from the comic strip, from Linus and Lucy to Schroeder and Snoopy. Snoopy’s dance and laughter tickled the audience, and soon there were even belly laughs to be heard among the crowd. What a delightful and entertaining afternoon!
The board members of the Souris District Arts Council want to thank the Souris community for their support. May the spirit of Christmas fill your homes with peace, warmth, and joy this holiday season.
